Cruising Tips for First Time Cruisers

Congratulations on booking your first cruise! As exciting as this can be, knowing how to prepare for a cruise can be a little overwhelming. Here are some cruise tips and tricks to help ensure your cruise is a success.

Do This Before Your First Cruise

Research your destinations to know what to expect while in port, what to expect in terms of weather while there, as well as during the cruise itself. This will help you pack smart and be prepared. You could need a light jacket, heavy coat, or maybe a small travel umbrella. If you're going to tropical destinations, sunscreen is a must, and if your destination has daily rain showers for example, a travel rain poncho might be easier to carry than an umbrella.

Port Stops on Cruises

Ports are full of people, shops, and fun things to do while you are there for the day. Be sure and grab a port map, which outlines any activities, shops, and local attractions that you may find interesting and fun. The port map can also prevent you from getting lost or having trouble finding your way around. Getting lost can take up a lot of your time and could cause problems getting back to the ship on time for boarding. People have been left behind while on their port excursions because they missed the ships departure, and once the ship has sailed, so has your vacation. Be sure to know scheduled boarding and departure times before going into port and plan your day accordingly. It is also recommended you avoid places outside of the general tourist area unless with a guide.

Remember to Bring Your International ID

Another important cruise ship tip is to carry your valid passport on every cruise. While even going on a "closed-loop" cruise where a passport would not normally be required, you should still bring it with you. In the event that your trip were to be interrupted due to an unforeseen illness or accident, missed boat departure at port, or emergencies back at home, you will not be allowed to book or board an international flight without a valid passport. If you were outside your home country while traveling on the cruise, it would be an international flight from any of the ports.
